RUGGED Dance Company began in May of 2009 when founder and choreographer Tawnya Kuzia was invited to present her work as a finalist for Capezio's ACE (Award for Choreographic Excellence) showcase in New York. Her work was selected out of hundreds of applicants as a top 10 finalist to represent herself as one of the top emerging choreographers in the nation. Her choreography travels through emotional and physical layers of intense, vulnerable, mechanical, and human shapes and moods. In 2010 Tawnya Kuzia was honored by Metro Magazine as one of the top young artists to watch in the next generation of Silicon Valley. Since the company's inception in May 2009 RUGGED has had the opportunity to perform throughout the Bay Area at numerous concert and commercial venues including the Cowell Theater, Dancing Downton, The Garage SF, The Montgomery Theater, San Jose State University where, the company was awarded the “Peoples Choice” award honor, CounterPulse SF, The Fairmont, FUZ, Santana Row, and Castro Valley Center for the Arts, to name a few. Rugged trains and performs in a contemporary movement style which fuses strong ballet, and contemporary technique with some hip hop movement quality. The company’s unique style is inspired by a variety of influences such as art, theatrics, humanity and culture. RUGGED dance company dancers are extremely passionate and dedicated artists in their craft. Rugged strives to bring a fresh and original voice to the Bay Area’s artistic community. Recently the company culminated their inaugural season with the world premier of OurGround, a self-produced full length theatrical show at the historic Montgomery Theater in May of 2009.
